Connecting Digital Optical Cables

Connect your Smart TV

If you need some answers to your setup questions, they should all be right here. We cover how to connect your HD devices, get your PC set up, and more.

CONNECT YOUR EXTERNAL HD DEVICES

Your LG Smart TV with webOS is great for all sorts of entertainment—digital cable, video gaming, and a host of other devices. There are several options for getting them set up and the diagrams below should remove some of the guesswork.

  • To prevent equipment damage, never plug in any power cords until you have finished connecting all equipment.
  • Image shown may differ from your TV.
  • Once you connect an HD receiver, DVD Player, or VCR to the TV, select an appropriate input mode.

HDMI Connection

HDMI is the best way to connect a device. It transmits both, the digital video and audio signals, from your external device to your TV. Connect your device and the TV with the HDMI cable as shown in the following illustration. Choose any HDMI input port to connect (it does not matter which port you use).

NOTE

ARC (Audio Return Channel)

When connected with a high-speed HDMI cable, digital audio can be sent to a compactible device without an additional optical audio cable.

ARC is only supported on the HDMI IN 1(ARC) port—an external audio device that supports ARC should be connected to HDMI IN 1(ARC) if you wish to use ARC.

DVI to HDMI Connection

This connection transmits just the digital video signal from an external device to the TV. Connect your device and the TV with the DVI-HDMI cable as shown in the diagram below. To transmit an audio signal, connect an audio cable. Choose any HDMI input port to connect (it does not matter which port you use).

Component Connection

This connection transmits analog video and audio signals from an external device to the TV. Connect your device and the TV with a component cable as shown in the following illustration. Check to ensure the cables are matched with the corresponding color connection.

NOTE

If cables are installed incorrectly, it could cause the TV image to display in black and white or with distorted color.

CONNECTING TO YOUR AUDIO SYSTEM

You may use an optional external audio system instead of the built-in speaker. Connect your external audio device and the TV with the digital optical audio cable as shown in the following illustration.

WARNING

Do not look into the optical output port. Looking at the laser beam may damage your vision.

SET UP YOUR DEVICES WITH UNIVERSAL CONTROL

It's quite simple to connect your Blu-Ray disc player, home theatre system, sound bar or gaming console to your LG Smart TV –and then control all your devices with one remote. We'll show you how.

HOOK UP A HOME THEATER SYSTEM OR SOUND BAR

Think of your LG Smart TV as the hub of your home entertainment universe. And, for a truly impressive sound experience, you can send the audio from streaming movies and videos out of the TV to your home theater system or sound bar. This can be done with ARC (Audio Return Channel) or an Optical Audio Cable. Watch the videos below for each type of connection.

CONNECT TO YOUR GAMING SYSTEM

Most gaming systems can connect to your TV using a variety of cables. Determining which cables you should use depend on what cable jacks you have available on your television and your personal preference for how you wish to experience your gaming content. Here are some helpful links from a few manufacturers to help you get set up.

CONNECT TO A PC
